November/December Edition Print

    President's Letter

I can hardly believe the holidays are here and soon many of us will be heading to PPAI’s 2019 Expo.  But before we jump ahead to 2019, I want to take a moment to thank those that have helped us make our organization stronger. Thanks to their dedication and support, we have made progress and are ready to get to the next level!

1 - Past President, Ivonne Lahlouh, has continued to be a gracious yet fierce supporter of the association, the PMANC Board, and of me. I have learned a lot from Ivonne and she has enriched my experience on the Board.

2 - Our Executive Director, Carol Murphy has been the amazing glue to our Board and association. Carol lives and breathes PMANC and is always available, helpful and positive! I think it’s safe to say she is our sunshine.

3- A big thank you also goes out to our Treasurer, Cristina Ysselstein, who has been a true mentor, friend, and has always done more than her fair share to help with my workload and for PMANC.

4 -We have an amazing Board and I want to thank all of them for their support and efforts over this last year. With their creativity and hard work, we were able to try some new things and pulled off many great events including enriching Professional Development, thank you Laurie Dowell!

5 –I can’t forget about our members!  I am truly grateful for our entire association. Thank you for having me as your President!  We hope you will continue to engage and volunteer in 2019. We have a lot of incredible plans!

See you at the Holiday Party on November 30th!

Thank you to the group of hard-working volunteers who showed up for our morning shift at Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose.  While we chatted about the joys of promo-work, we also worked up a sweat (and few scrapes and blisters) packing special bags for the homeless that included ready-to-eat foods and toiletries.  After a short break, we launched into sorting pallets of fresh veggies and eggs for families. I know we were all thankful to be able to contribute together in some way and enjoyed getting together as well!

PPAI Responds to FAST COMPANY's Industry Criticism
Fast Company article, published earlier this month, derided promotional products, criticizing their environmental footprint and mischaracterizing the industry as one that sells its products solely in a race to the bottom with pricing. In a letter to the magazine and in a post on his blog, PPAI President and CEO Paul Bellantone, CAE, pushed back against the article’s message and its excess of misconceptions and criticism about the industry.

“The influence of promotional products cannot be underestimated,” Bellantone wrote. “They are a strategic and influential medium that resonates with our audiences. Promotional products are welcome in places and spaces no other advertising medium can touch and deliver pass-along rates that are the envy of the advertising industry.”

Bellantone’s letter highlights PPAI’s research showing that more than 65 percent of advertisers cite promotional products as highly effective in reaching consumers and contributing to brand recall, and 88 percent of marketers recommend them. Unlike what the article suggests, promotional products are not toss-away items—in fact, more than 80 percent of promotional products are used for more than a year because they are useful. Also, 83 percent of consumers have a more favorable impression of the advertiser when promotional products are used, and that increases to 88 percent for Millennials. Additionally, eight out of 10 consumers pass along promotional products versus throwing them away.

    Carson Cooks!

    Doug Carson, Carson Solutions

My son, Mark lives in San Diego and we usually go to visit in August. He turned 50 years old this year...yes 50 years old! So this year my other son, Matt and his family drove to San Diego with Melinda and me. We had a great week which included a 50th birthday party with some of Mark’s friends. Mark is a semi-vegetarian. He eats some fish and occasionally chicken, but his primary choice of food is vegetarian. The guests had a variety of tastes in food, so we had something for everyone, but today’s recipe is an idea I had for Mark.  It really turned out great with everyone enjoying it, so I needed to share the recipe. What I like about it is its versatility. All you have to do is add grilled chicken or prawns, and you can satisfy the protein desires of other guests. Make the basic recipe below then, put it into the mushrooms and add the protein of choice on top and bake. I used quinoa in San Diego to satisfy a gluten-free guest, and I  have used couscous for other dinner parties recently. The flavors are very similar with most of the flavor coming from the vegetables and seasoning.

    4 large portabella mushrooms
1 cup of Quinoa or Tri Color Couscous
    1 medium size zucchini chopped
    ½ cup minced red onion
1 red or yellow or orange bell pepper minced or use a mixture of the red, yellow & orange mini bells. (This is a good option.)
2 cloves of garlic - minced
12 button tomatoes cut in small pieces
1 cup of chopped Fresh Asiago Cheese
¼ cup of grated Pecorino Romano Cheese
    2 TBLS Olive Oil
    3 tsp Sea Salt
2 TBLS of Aglio Olio Peperoncino Pasta Seasoning**

**You can get the above spice from “AllSpicery”  (It is a mixture of Dried Italian Parsley, Basil, Garlic, Chili Flakes and Sea Salt. This seasoning is great on fish and all vegetables so buying some online will come in handy. If not, use a variety of the ingredients above and it will work. Still, use the fresh garlic as called for in the recipe.

Boil 2 cups of and add 1 tsp of salt. When it comes to a boil, add 1 cup of the quinoa. Stir then cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until quinoa is tender and water is evaporated. Remove quinoa and place in a mixing bowl to cool.

When quinoa is cool, add all above minced and chopped ingredients and mix thoroughly. If too dry, just add a little olive oil but not too much.

Scrap the brown scales from inside the mushrooms. Drizzle them with olive oil and the Alio Olio. Stuff each mushroom with the mixture.

Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes

Chicken – cut chicken into strips and layer overstuffed mushroom and bake. Use the same seasoning as above for the chicken.
