PPDRF Gives Support to Promotional Products Businesses
    when Disaster Strikes

2017 was a devastating year with natural disasters such as catastrophic floods, wildfires and earthquakes affecting millions across the globe. Hurricane Harvey poured more than 35 inches of rain in Houston. Hurricane Irma was the most intense Atlantic storm to hit the US since Katrina in 2005 and left a trail of destruction in Florida and Puerto Rico. Weeks after Hurricane Irma, Puerto Rico was hit again by Hurricane Maria.

In California, October brought more than a dozen wildfires and ravaged thousands of acres of Northern California. The largest wildfire ever, the massive Thomas fire scorched more than 280,000 acres in Southern California--nearly the size of New York City!

The Promotional Products Disaster Recovery Foundation (PPDRF) was created by the Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) and the Regional Association Council (RAC) to help promotional products industry members and non-members get back to business in the wake of a federally-declared natural disaster. The foundation helped so many businesses in 2017 that the fund is completely gone.

PMANC is dedicated to raising awareness and doing whatever possible to help rebuild the PPDRF fund. Fires are already raging in California. Will you help with a donation today?

If you would like to donate with a check, please make the check payable to PPDRF. Please include the name of your regional association, PMANC.
    Send the check to:

    Fitness: Mind and Body

One of the hottest trends the Millennial generation has brought to our industry is  fitness related products. We see this trend through health and wellness programs, corporate mindfulness, stress relieving environments, and athletic clothing made for everyday wear known as “athleisure.” The fitness industry exploded overnight—Nike, Champion, Adidas, and Lululemon are all companies that have doubled their growth within the last 5 years.  Let’s zoom into why Millennials contribute to these company’s large brand growth.

In 2017, a Social Behavior and Personality study was applied to 400 Millennials on US and International college campuses asking them a series of survey questions to measure the importance of specific factors that influence their decisions to purchase branded product.  The two factors Millennials listed as important for the brands they continued to buy, and willingly represent, came down to the company’s global footprint, and the company’s willingness to give back to the community. Millennials put more justification in a company’s global recognition than local companies (This shocked me!). The study continued by stating Millennials feel justified to pay more for a product if they know that a portion of that product’s revenue goes toward charity. In addition, consumers elevated a brand more positively when there was misfit between the product offered and the cause that is being supported. Companies be aware, there was an indirect evaluation of the partnership between the companies and the selected charities. If there is any reason that consumers feel suspicion of the company’s charity motives, then consumers were not motived to buy their product.

We see a lot of these motives coming into our industry on both the supplier and distributor side. Consumers are asking a plethora of questions as to where the product comes from—globalization, how it was made--sustainability, and the materials being used—recyclable. In addition, we see this trend in our office environments. Our last PMANC Millennial Moment article spoke on the importance Millennials place on choosing their work environments. Millennials want to be working for a “green” company, or a company that regularly gives back to the community or provides a feng shui stress-free environment for their employees. This tells us that the same two factors Millennials put as important for their consumed brands are also applied in their everyday decision making. “Fitness” is now synonymous with both the mind and body.

    Carson Cooks!

    Doug Carson, Carson Solutions

My wife came to me and said she was craving some fish.  She loves poached halibut, but the store was out of fresh halibut.  Instead, they had some beautiful fresh sole and, since we both love scallops, I decided to experiment.  It was wonderful.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

    4 Sole fish filets
8 Large scallops (two per filet)
    2 TBLS Fresh marjoram, minced
½ bag of baby spinach per filet OR 4 large spinach leaves per filet
    ¼ cup Sesame seeds (optional)
    Olive Oil
Salt & White Pepper, to taste

Season each filet with salt, white pepper and marjoram.  Drizzle each filet with olive oil and rub in the seasonings.  Poach the spinach (toss in boiling water for approximately one minute) then drain it completely to remove all liquid.  Pat dry the leaves and layer each filet with poached spinach leaves.  Place a scallop at one end of a filet (over the spinach) and roll the filet over the scallop; when covered, add the second scallop and finish rolling.  Secure the rolled filet with a wooden toothpick.  Drizzle each roll with olive oil and dredge in sesame seeds, if desired.  Roast filets in a shallow roasting pan for approximately 25 minutes at a pre-heated 375-degree oven.  Serve with your favorite white sauce, or try an experiment of mine:

    Carson's Favorite White Sauce
    ¼ cup White Corn Juice
    3 TBLS Carrot Juice
    ½ cube Butter
    2 dashes Hot Sauce
    ¼ cup Dry White Wine
    2 TBLS Flour
½ cup Red Bell Pepper Sauce
    Salt & Pepper, to taste
1 cup Cream (or Pana, if you can find it at your local Italian Market)

When did you first start working in the promotional products industry? I first started working in the promotional products industry in 2012.

What do you listen to in the car when on the road? I love to stream sporting events from MLB, NFL, to NHL games. I also anxiously await the weekly new Throwback Thursday playlist every Thursday to stream on Spotify.

What is the best piece of advice you've gotten in regards to the industry? Remember to step back and bask in the glow on occasion. It's a blessing to work in such a FUN, current industry that has been around for decades.

What is your favorite food? My favorite food is hands down....ice cream!

Where did you meet your spouse? I met my husband Mark for the first time through his co-worker who was also my roommate. We all joined a sport and social kick ball league when I first moved to the Bay area.

What is the happiest moment in your life? It's a little cliche but the happiest moment in my life is hands down when I married my husband, Mark.

Favorite sports team? This is the hardest question in the book for me. I'm a sports fanatic and have a team I love in every sport. Above them all though, I would have to say it's the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL.
