    President's Letter


    I am writing this a few weeks after we closed our Spring Market Showcase in Monterey. The whole event was phenomenal and what an experience the Golf, Happy Hour, SanMar Fashion Show, Professional Development and Show itself brought to our membership.

    When they say, “it takes a village” this was one of those times. There are so many to thank, and I don’t want to leave anyone out. I would like to thank our dedicated board and recognize all their hard work in making our Spring Showcase an incredible experience. A BIG shout out and "thank you" to all our sponsors, distributors, suppliers, committee members, and AMAZING VOLUNTEERS! Of course, a huge thank you, to Carol Murphy, our Executive Director.  You all made our showcase a delightful and memorable event.

    Over the past few years we have been working hard to produce more than just a tradeshow, instead making it a one of a kind “experience” for all. We are always looking for ways to continue to bring new ideas and add value to our events that benefit our members. Our Spring Market Showcase had a farmer’s market theme that celebrated some of what Northern California offers and to spotlight our local promotional marketing community. Another fresh idea that we executed at the show was our New Products Studio which provided a creative and interactive place for distributors to snap curated product ideas for their clients.

    We have heard wonderful feedback from many of you on this show and venue.  We appreciate all your thoughts and comments as we start planning for the 2019 Spring Market. We are so fortunate to have a membership that is engaged and eager to give feedback.

    Our next major event is our Fall Market Showcase at Casa Real in Pleasanton on September 13th. Anyone interested in volunteering on a committee, please feel free to email me to be invited to the next Spring Showcase committee meeting or to join us at a board meeting!  Getting involved at the regional level is an important way to have your voice heard and to give back to the industry that supports us all.

    Reflections on the SHOWCASE Professional Development Sessions

    Our Monterey SHOWCASE was absolutely amazing and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as our board did putting it together.  A big thank you goes to Sam Brown (BrandVia) for moderating Promo 101 and making it a fun, interactive session and to Patrick Kenney and Nina Ritchie (PCNA) for giving such an informative look at artwork and decoration in Art 101.  So much of what we do relies on volunteers and I am so grateful to all three for stepping up and making our Education Day a success!

    Our keynote address, “From the Ground Up” was so inspiring.  Jeremy Lott (Sanmar), Tom Goos (Image Source) and Paul Bellantone (PPAI) gave us in-depth looks at their journey into making them the success they are today.  It was inspiring to listen how workplace culture is a key ingredient to their business and giving back is part of their day to day life.  That theme of giving back was kicked off with Jim Childers (BrandVia) introductions.  Jim focused on the importance of getting involved in our promo community and we appreciate his years of dedication to PMANC.

    Up next is our Fall Showcase at Casa Real and we are cooking up some exciting Professional Development training that will spark your creative juices.  We would love to hear from our members on content ideas.  One of the best ways to stay competitive is to be proactive in educating yourself and your team.  PMANC’s goal is to develop engaging formats that leave a powerful impact.

    PMANC Cares at SACRED HEART              

    PMANC Cares organized a fun and productive volunteer shift at Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose.

    We had 15 Suppliers and Distributors (and two nice husbands ) who showed up early on Saturday April 14th ready for some hard work and eager to make a difference in the community.

    Many of our volunteers had already heard about the amazing work that Sacred Heart organization is doing in San Jose. With all of their programs, there were many ways our group was able to lend a hand.

    Most of us worked preparing pallets of grocery bags with food staples for area families, while others sorted vegetables as well as clothing.  It was fun to hear the “industry chat” while we worked and the group got to know each other.  After the shift many of us got together for nice lunch as well.

    We’ve volunteered San Francisco and San Jose so our next locations will be Peninsula and East Bay.

    In Memoriam: Fran Ford, CAS
    Francis "Fran" Ford, Jr., CAS, president of supplier Castelli, a division of Magnet, LLC, and 2015 PPAI Hall of Fame inductee, passed away Monday after a long fight with cancer.

    Ford spent more than 40 years in the promotional products industry starting with his own sporting goods business, Motford, Inc., and then moved to sales and leadership positions with suppliers including Jaffa Company, Martin Company, Lenox Awards, BTS Group and Eight Floor Promotions, including serving as president of J Charles Crystalworks.

    Steve DeMars joins Clegg Promo
    Clegg Promo (ASI 45450), headquartered in Los Angeles, California, hires Steve DeMars as the West Coast Regional Sales Manager, covering Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Steve is an industry veteran and brings 18 years of experience.

    Steve DeMars commented, “I am very excited to join Clegg Promo in a full-time role.  I had the opportunity to represent Clegg Promo as a Multi-line Rep for more than a year.  The inside team at Clegg and their dedication to customer service is outstanding.  There is a lot more than meets the eye with Clegg Promo and I look forward to sharing our new product development and custom sourcing capabilities with our distributors in the western region.”

    Dan McEntee Joins HALO As Senior VP
    Distributor HALO Branded Solutions (PPAI 106462) announces the addition of Dan McEntee as senior vice president of global sourcing. McEntee most recently served as president of industry supplier Golden Pacific after many years in a variety of leadership positions at distributor Staples. McEntee will report to Jim Stutz, HALO executive vice president of business development.

    Hub Pen Adds Carol Nickerson to Customer Service Team

    Braintree, MA, May, 2018 – HUB Promotional Group’s Hub Pen Company is pleased to announce the addition of Carol Nickerson to their award winning customer service team.

    The Brockton native comes to Hub with over 12 years of customer service experience in the promotional products industry with a New England greeting card supplier.

    “They were really nice people, like the people here at Hub,” Carol says. “Everyone is so friendly and helpful, and I love working with the customers on their orders. I’m really impressed with the amount of pens we sell and how quickly they go out.”

    I am not a vegetarian or a vegan. My son is almost a vegetarian, he eats some fish once in a while and still likes regular cheese. With that being said, he eats a lot of vegetarian and vegan foods. When we visit him in San Diego, he takes us to those types of restaurants, and my wife and I really like some of the dishes. We always go on a hike in the DelMar State Park on the ocean. Great exercise, and I am always ready to eat. A good double cheeseburger would be nice, but he takes us to a vegan restaurant in downtown LaJolla. It is on the top of the roof of an office building with inside/outside casual seating. I was very leary but ordered a hambuger they had on the menu. I LOVED IT and my wife loved her enchilada. Couldn’t tell you what was in the food, but it was good and satisfying. To be clear, I am not going vegetarian or vegan but I respect those who are and love most of their food.

    Below is my version of a dish we had in another vegetarian restaurant. I changed it to my taste. I hope you enjoy it and as you will see, it has a meat option which I choose most of the time.

    1 cup of Tri-Color Couscus or regular                   
    1 ½ cups of water
    1 cup cherry tomatoes                                        
    1 cup minced cucumber
    1/2 cup Minced basil, more if you like.                            
    (I like extra basil some people don’t.)       
    1/2 cup diced red onion                                         
    1/8 tsp of black pepper
    1/2 cup minced red, yellow or orange bell pepper or a combination
    ¼ tsp sea salt for mixture                                           
    Salt – 1 tsp for water to boil c

    Boil couscus in water & salt per package instructions. When couscus is done, drain and place in a serving bowl to cool. Run fork through the couscus to fluff . Meanwhile, slice tomatoes in half. Mince the onions, cucumbers, bell peppers and basil. When couscus is cool, add all ingredients and mix well. Place in the refrigerator for about an hour. It is then ready to serve. You can eat it right away, but I have found that letting it set for a while in the refrigerator helps blend the flavors.

    2 chicken breasts                                                              
    Salt & Pepper
    1 tsp granulated garlic                                                   
    1 tsp Italian seasoning
    2 TBLS olive oil (For chicken seasoning)                 
    1 tsp olive oil (Cooking)

    Pour olive oil over entire surfice of chicken, 1 TBLS per breast. Sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic and Italian seasoning over breast. Rub seasoning all over chicken. Pour olive oil in saute pan and rub the whole pan surface. Heat pan with oil until hot, then add chicken and sear the breast on medium heat until golden brown.

    SUGGESTION: I slice the chicken breast in half horizontaly, then season all halves. This allows you to sear the breast to golden brown and cook them through. However, don’t overcook the breast. Cook only until the pink is gone. This will keep the chicken moist.

    Slice the chicken into ¼ in” slices and serve over couscus.
