    PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Congratulations to PMANC for a Successful 2017 Showcase!

What a great turnout and good time we had at this year’s SHOWCASE! I’ve attended the PMANC SHOWCASE for many years and I’m always impressed by the overall quality of the show. This year, as President, I can tell you I’m extremely impressed by the incredible amount of teamwork and dedication that goes into making this show work. Thanks to the PMANC Board of Directors, exhibitors, volunteers and all who attended. Your collective contributions made the show a big success.

We kicked off the SHOWCASE with the 9th annual Golf Tournament held at the beautiful Pacific Grove course.  Thanks to our Golf Committee Chairperson Howard Berman and John Oda for coordinating another outstanding golf tournament and to the many sponsors for their contributions.

Our new Promo 101 class, designed to provide a quick-start education to the industry and how it works, was a slam dunk success! I’ve heard nothing but great reviews on the class.  I want to personally thank Melissa Deckelman, Cristina Ysselstein, and Dennis Klum for their long hours of work and collaboration that really made this program spark.  We will offer this class again in the future. I urge you to consider sending your new hires, or current employees if they have less than 2 years in the industry to the next session.

And speaking of education, I really want to extend our gratitude to SanMar and Gemline for providing very useful information at the Tools & Trends breakfast seminar. The turnout was exceptional and we’ve had nothing but good feedback.

Our SHOWCASE registration area never looked better! Special thanks to our very own ED, Carol Murphy, who together with Donte Shannon (ED, SAAC) and Karen & Ken Williston, made sure the registration area ran smoothly and efficiently with friendly service.

What I can say about the Fashion Show and Fiesta but FUN, FUN, FUN!! The Fashion Show was as lively and entertaining as ever.  Thanks to Jodi Spangrud, for the incredible amount of work she did to coordinate the event and all the models.  The dance floor was a great addition this year and it was crowded all night!

Please save the date for our annual Fall Holiday Showcase at Wente on September 20th, 2017.  I look forward to seeing you there!!

    LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

PMANC Board Member and Goldstar Vice President of Sales Kenny Ved joined PPAI and nearly 70 advocates from 30 states in Washington, D.C. for the fifth annual PPAI L.E.A.D. (Legislative Action and Action Day).  Together the group conducted approximately 250 meetings with senators, congressional representatives and their legislative staffs on Capitol Hill.

Kenny represented PMANC alongside Executive Director Donte Shannon of SAAC and Board Member of SAAC Bob Levitt for 12 meetings over the 2 days.

As part of the delegation, Kenny helped lobby members of Congress on a range of issues that impact the promotional products industry and the overall health of the advertising industry including the status of independent contractors, the deductibility of advertising expenses and import legislation.

“This truly was a humbling experience to be the voice of our industry on Capitol Hill” said Kenny Ved. We walked in their offices and see promotional products everywhere. Bob Levitt said it best “This is the stuff that got you elected!”

    About PPAI L.E.A.D.
PPAI's Legislative Education and Action Day (L.E.A.D.) delivers the promotional products industry's message to Capitol Hill. Each year, industry professionals travel to Washington D.C. to educate members of Congress about the effectiveness of promotional products and the strength of the industry in the U.S.

    MILLENNIAL MOMENT

ARE FIDGET SPINNERS HERE TO STAY
Someone needs to ask the question, “What's up with The Spinner?”

It seems overnight, the Spinner has taken our industry by storm. What is so magical about this tiny piece of plastic that has factories running around trying to keep up with its momentum?

First, we need to understand why this modern stress reliever became a sensation overnight. When I first came across this product, I thought this was a gift from Millennials, however, my findings concluded something else.

Let's start with the definition of fidgeting. It is defined as “making small movements, especially of the hands and feet, through nervousness or impatience. To be restless, and eager.” I can’t help but laugh at this definition’s tie to the consensus each older generation has toward Millennials. Many of the characteristics shared among media shows Millennials as a generation that is impatient, needy, restless, and spinning out of control. To date, the fidget spinner is the poster product for my generation.

Before you start laughing, note that the act of fidgeting has benefits, and whether the Millennials were aware of this, they may have felt it. Before the Spinners debut, many articles and studies focused on the benefits of fidgeting. Huffington Post exposed a study of over 1,000 women who are in sedentary position for at least 7 hours a day. Those who did not fidget were associated with a 30 percent rise in mortality risk!  The American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology continued the topic by stating it helps with blood flow and weight loss. The NY Times posted an article in 2015 on a study in Child Neuropsychology titled, Fidgeting May Benefit Children With A.D.H.D.  They found that the more intensely that the children with A.D.H.D. fidgeted — the more accurate their answers were during test taking. When these children were relatively still, their responses were much more likely to be wrong, indicating that they had trouble concentrating.

Maybe there is something to be said here? We concentrate much better when we fidget than when we don’t. I find everyone fidgets, whether they realize it or not. Maybe for you, it's chewing on a pen cap, tapping your pencil, clicking the top of the pen over and over, twirling your hair, moving side-to-side in your rotating chair, or even rubbing your forehead. We do these things to clear our mind for an instant in order to assess the task at hand.

The fidget is a microscopic distraction from our daily storms. Every day we are pushed an incredible amount of imagery, persuasion, and constant information that leads us to feel overexposed. The KOA (Kampgrounds of America) estimated around 37 million households in the country went camping at least once during 2016. That sounds like a lot of people wanting to detach from over exposure!

In a sense, the spinner offers that to people. It offers the chance to regroup, recharge, and concentrate. At first, I thought this was a gift from millennials, but the age group that pleads for this product ranges from the ages under 21 years old.  The Centennial generation may be showing us how they are affected by the technosocial exposure--and we should listen!

    LEARN ABOUT OUR MEMBERS

    WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH GARY DINMAN??
Welcome to PMANC’s spotlight on our members!  Each month I (Laurie Dowell - JNI) will be reaching out to a distributor or supplier and sharing their thoughts on the ups and downs of this ever-changing industry.

PMANC was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends as they move to different companies and you lose touch. I am lucky to have a friend that has traveled the same road with me for 29 years. Gary Dinman and I started in the industry at the same time and he is a wealth of knowledge regarding product and is always giving of his time. Let’s take a look at what’s happening with Gary!

What makes Jack Nadel International different from other distributors in the industry?
    DINMAN: JNI is a unique company in several ways;
    A) They actively listen and implement recommendations from the sales force in the field rather than managing from the top down.

    B) They are hiring perhaps the youngest sales force of any large company recognizing that this will keep them current and vital in the years ahead and also because most of our buyers are millennials and can relate to them.

What is the most interesting part of your job?
    DINMAN:
The creative aspect that has the ability to solve issues while wowing the client at the same time.

What do you feel has been the most important innovation you have seen in our industry?
DINMAN: The speed at which we can deliver fully custom overseas concepts using the right offshore partners.

What role do you think social media plays in the selling process?
DINMAN: Vital for connecting with the younger buyers who grew up with it.

What advice can you give someone coming into the industry?
DINMAN: Look at what is working for others and mimic that success but add your own strengths to that for a unique stew.

What are 3 career lessons you have learned through the years?
    DINMAN:
    A) Work like balance so you don’t burn out and can be effective, B) It’s OK to do things in your own way and style. C) Mimic the successes of others and do what they do where it fits.

    What motivates you?
DINMAN: Freedom to create in my own way.

What is the craziest thing on your bucket list?
Having a part-time home in another country.

People would be surprised if they knew what about you?
DINMAN: That I was a wild child hippy in my early years living in Africa before I started at the University.

Lastly, the Fidget is the latest craze in our industry. Is it gone in 60 seconds or here for eternity???
DINMAN: Neither, it will run it’s run until the next craze.

GET TO KNOW YOUR BOARD MEMBERS

Please join us in welcoming one of PMANC's newer members, Tony Lee! We are happy to have him on board and thought you may want to hear a little more about him.

When did you first start working in the promotional products industry?
    Tony: November 2012

What do you listen to in the car when on the road?
Tony: Mostly sports talk radio, but I do listen to hip-hop / R&B often as well.

What is the best piece of advice you've gotten in regards to the industry?
Tony: Build as many relationships as possible and to keep a list of reliable people for advice.

    What is your favorite food?
Tony: Italian, Lasagna might be my #1 favorite dish.

Where did you meet your spouse?
Tony: End of high school heading into college.

    Do you have any children?
Tony: Just had my first one on FEB 18th 2017

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in front of a client and how did you recover?
    Tony:
I brought in a bad sample which I was called out on. A very detailed customer was able to find all the faults that day. I was honest about why, how, and what I didn’t know or did not prepare for. The best thing I did was to not dig myself a hole by lying and getting myself into more trouble.

What is the happiest moment in your life?
Tony: The birth of my first child.

    Favorite sports team
Tony: It’s a tie between the 49ers, Warriors, and Giants.

If you could do anything in the world and not fail what would it be?
Tony: I would be a professional athlete.

    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer Your Talents and Make a Difference in Our Industry

PMANC’s goal this year is to increase engagement with our members. Being a PMANC volunteer is a great way to build valuable professional relationships, gain visibility, and make an impact that matters to all of us.

    Short on time? No problem!
Many of our members have expressed interest in volunteering, but have very little time and don’t want to over-commit to a large project. This year we’re offering volunteer opportunities to match your schedule, whether you only have an hour, or would like to be involved in a major event, such as the annual Showcase.

Please take our quick survey and let us know your area of interest and how much time you have available. Our new Volunteer Committee Chair, Tony Lee (Stormtech) will contact you and discuss what assignment might be a good fit.

Please CLICK HERE to let us know how you would like to be involved.  Thank you!
